THE CITY OF THE TRUFFLE

PIZZO

ANCIENT ALLEYS WITH THE SCENT OF THE SEA

Overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast, Pizzo enjoys a wonderful position, where you can admire landscapes and sunsets with fantastic colors, and enjoy the spectacle of the Aeolian Islands. It is characterized by many houses joined together on a cliff overlooking the sea , and two bays on the side  open onto the sea. Its historic center is characterized by many alleys that lead from the Great Piazza della Repubblica to the many churches and the seafront, to visit the beautiful Church of Piedigrotta , created in the cave in which the sea stormed in 600  the picture of the Madonna was brought and carried by a sailing ship. In the following centuries statues were made with marine sedimentary rocks and frescoes

Moving through the alleys you can admire the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Garibaldi fountain and right from the square you can see the famous Aragonese Castle dedicated to Murat, dating back to 1400. Built as a military fortress, it has a quadrangular shape and is located overlooking the Tyrrhenian. Inside it is possible to walk through historical reconstructions admiring furnishings, paintings and clothes of the time.
Going down the Cristoforo Colombo promenade, you can admire the natural beauties of the whole coast and breathe the scent of the sea.

You cannot leave Pizzo without indulging in a small sin of gluttony in the large Piazza dell Repubblica, savoring the very famous Tartufo di Pizzo , the first ice cream to have obtained the IGP mark in Europe.
Invented in the 1950s, the classic truffle is based on hazelnut ice cream with a heart of melted chocolate and covered with cocoa powder. Today there are many and very good variations of the truffle, which in addition to being a delicacy is a real institution for the region.
